Child marriages are a cruel & abusive practice, and they are more common than we’d like to think. According to the International Women’s Health Coalition, between 20 and 70 percent of women marry before they turn 18. These occur for a variety of reasons, including “protecting” the virginity of the girls, or to gain money in exchange. Marriages at such a young age are not only emotionally stressful, but also physically dangerous.
Around 90% of pregnancies under the age of 15 can be attributed to child marriages. Even the youngest of brides usually become sexually active as soon as they are married, some before they get their first period. Young wives face immense pressure from their husbands and the communities to begin childbirth as soon as possible, putting them at great danger.
