A story of Freedom, Justice and Hope
MUMBAI, INDIA: Salila had been offered a job in a nearby city by a man she trusted. Instead of a job in a nearby community, the man forced her to distant Mumbai, where he brought her to a brothel on the city’s outskirts and sold her to its owners. When Salila refused the brothel’s customers, she was beaten and threatened until she submitted. Escape was impossible.
IJM investigators in Mumbai discovered that she was being held in the brothel. The investigators carefully documented proof and worked with local police to set up a sting operation. One night, the team entered the brothel and safely rescued Salila and five other girls.
The wounds of Salila’s abuse were deep, but through the support she experienced in her aftercare home, she began to heal. She finished school and was trained in career skills; she developed warm relationships with new friends. Salila now works for a jewelry manufacturer. She has a savings account in her own name and has built a stable life. -IJM
